AgEd instructors teach a variety of courses in these grades, such as agribusiness, animal science, horticulture and natural resources. Students in the AgEd concentration will also develop the skills necessary to teach students about animal science, horticultural and sustainable agriculture. Because of the extensive training in agriculture subjects, individuals who choose not to teach after graduation have found lucrative and successful careers in all types of agriculture fields. Employment: Our students typically are hired throughout North Carolina as well as in surrounding states, such as South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee, to teach middle or high school courses as well as community college.

Within the Agriscience program, there are 2 programs of study; Animal Science and Horticulture. Agriculture meets the daily needs that many students take for granted. In a growing global economy, it is imperative that students develop an awareness of the processes that sustain human, plant and animal life. In the Southern Guilford Agriculture Department, students gain hands-on experiences in the school greenhouses, agriculture shop and school barn.

Horticulture Technology

This course provides instruction on the broad field of horticulture with emphasis on the scientific and technical knowledge for a career in horticulture. Topics in this course include plant growth and development, plant nutrition, media selection, basic plant identification, pest management, chemical disposal, customer relations, and career opportunities.English language arts, mathematics, and science are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course are apprenticeship, cooperative education, internship, mentorship, school-based enterprise, job shadowing, and supervised agricultural experience. FFA competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences. The Central Piedmont Horticulture Technology curriculum is designed to prepare you for various careers in horticulture. Towards a Sustainable Agriculture: A Curriculum for High School Classes

The population of students includes a majority of African-American. A strong relationship with community members was also maintained through donation of plant material and produce from the Urban Food Platform. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? Training opportunities have been also provided to 4 students working part time in staffing roles on the grant, as well as to additional students working or volunteering at the Reid Greenhouse. Two of these volunteers came weekly work at the platform, one of them was doing service-learning within the framework of his studies at the Early Stem College on campus.

At higher levels, agricultural education is primarily undertaken to prepare students for employment in the agricultural sector. Bullington Gardens Director John Murphy said the team created a bamboo backdrop for the bridge, upon which they planted bright red, orange, and yellow plants — and a special addition. Through the BOOST and Horticultural Therapy programs at the gardens, high school students in Occupational Course of Study classes hone skills to supplement their technical education classes, while learning task management, teamwork, and budgeting. Beginning with a research and development phase, students from all four traditional high schools have visited Bullington weekly since January to prep their gardens with Murphy. Murphy said once the teams decide on their themes, they flip through seed catalogs to find plants to match. The winning team from North took home a plaque and a gift card to Chick-Fil-A, and Murphy hopes all the students in the program cultivated a positive work ethic and appreciation for horticulture. In between sneaking bites of colored sugar sprinkles, a focused group of 3rd-5th grade students with faces covered in bright green icing spent weeks in November exercising a willingness to compromise, working through challenges as a team, and demonstrating an impressive use of fine motor skills. Under the guise of a Monday morning pep rally for a canned food drive, district administrators gathered the Mills River Elementary school community to surprise 2nd grade teacher Ryan Mitchell with the news that he is the North Carolina Regional Teacher of the Year for the Western Region.
